Emanuel Vigelands 150-årsjubileum åpner med utstillingen «Valborgs lille mareritt», en psykologisk thriller av kunstnerduoen Hjorth & Kjølaas på Emanuel Vigelands Museum, Lørdag 10. mai kl 13:00.

Utstillingen består av en serie tegninger, og vil vise originalverk av Emanuels kone og kunstnerkollega Valborg Kristine Madsen — et kunstnerskap hvor nærmest ingen informasjon i dag er å oppdrive — i atelier-rommet på museet som for anledningen åpnes for publikum.

«Valborgs lille mareritt» er en oppfølger til Hjorth & Kjølaas sitt oppdiktede mordmysterium på Kunstnerforbundet i 2022 — «Mord i parapsykisk selskap», som avsluttet med at Valborg ankommer Kristiania med et merkverdig egg fra Paris. Egget er mistenkelig likt urnen som er plassert over inngangen til mausoleet.

Emanuel Vigelands museum ble først påbegynt som et atelier i 1926, og over en periode på 20 år omgjort til et mausoleum av kunstneren selv. Det rommer «Vita», en 800 kvadratmeter stor erotisk fresko om livet, fra fødsel til død, som har blitt omtalt som Oslos best bevarte hemmelighet. 

Utstillingen er den første i en serie separatutstillinger som markerer 150-års jubileet for Emanuel Vigelands fødsel og retter fokus på det akutte behovet for å restaurere det verdenskjente mausoleet, som er på vei til å smuldre opp. 20 prosent av alle salg vil gå til å støtte restaureringen. Utstillingen er kuratert av Krister Kanck.

Hjorth & Kjølaas er en kunstnerduo basert i Oslo, bestående av Siri Hjorth og Sebastian Makonnen Kjølaas. De giftet seg i Emanuel Vigelands mausoleum i 2016. Deres arbeider faller inn under kategorier som satire, karikatur, avant-garde, camp, filosofi, samfunnskritikk og erotikk, gjennom hovedsakelig tegning og skulptur. I 2024 avsluttet de utsmykningen av Nord Universitet i Bodø med et monument over akademisk frihet, «Universitetsportalen» (2024) og en serie tegninger titulert «Forskningsreisen» (2024) til universitetets storsatsning innen biologi, dyr og hav. Hjorth & Kjølaas har vist arbeider ved LIAF, Kunstnerforbundet, Nasjonalmuseet, Henie Onstad kunstsenter, Kunstnernes Hus, Kunsthall Kristiansand, Kunsthall Oslo, Bauhaus Museum og Fondazione Prada. Serien om Emanuel Vigeland, «Mord i parapsykisk selskap» ble innkjøpt av Oslo kommunes kunstsamling, og de er blant annet i Henie Onstad samlingen, KORO samlingen og Stavanger kommunes kunstsamling. I 2026 er de aktuelle med separatutstilling på NITJA senter for samtidskunst.

«Valborg’s Little Nightmare»

Emanuel Vigeland’s 150th anniversary opens with the exhibition «Valborg’s Little Nightmare», a psychological thriller by the artist duo Hjorth & Kjølaas at the Emanuel Vigeland Museum, Saturday May 10 at 1:00 p.m.

The exhibition vill show a series of drawings, together with original works by Emanuel’s wife and fellow artist Valborg Kristine Madsen — an artist about which almost no information can be found today — in the atelier room at the museum, which is being opened to the public for the occasion.

«Valborgs little nightmare» is a sequel to Hjorth & Kjølaas’ fictional murder mystery at Kunstnerforbundet in 2022 — «A Murder in Parapsychic Company», which ended with Valborg arriving in Kristiania with a strange egg from Paris. The egg is suspiciously similar to the urn placed above the entrance to the mausoleum.

The Emanuel Vigeland Museum was first built as a studio in 1926, and over a period of 20 years, converted into a mausoleum by the artist himself. It houses «Vita», an 800 square meter erotic fresco about life, from birth to death, which has been described as Oslo’s best-kept secret. 

The exhibition is the first in a series of solo exhibitions marking the 150th anniversary of Emanuel Vigeland’s birth and focusing on the urgent need to restore the world-famous mausoleum, which is on the verge of eroding. 20 percent of all sales will go to support the restoration. The exhibition is curated by Krister Kanck.

Hjorth & Kjølaas is an artist duo based in Oslo, consisting of Siri Hjorth and Sebastian Makonnen Kjølaas. They married in Emanuel Vigeland’s Mausoleum in 2016. Their work fall into categories such as satire, caricature, avant-garde, camp, philosophy, social criticism and eroticism, mainly through drawing and sculpture. In 2024, they completed an art in public space project at Nord University in Bodø with a monument to academic freedom, «The University Gate» (2024) and a series of drawings titled «The Research Expedition» (2024) for the university’s major new investment within biology and aquaculture. Hjorth & Kjølaas’ work has been shown at Lofoten International Art Festival (LIAF), Kunstnerforbundet, the National Museum, Henie Onstad Art Center, Kunstnernes Hus, Kunsthall Kristiansand, Kunsthall Oslo, Bauhaus Museum and Fondazione Prada. Their series about Emanuel Vigeland, «Mord i parapsykisk selskap», was purchased by the Oslo City Art Collection. Their work are in the Henie Onstad Collection, the KORO Collection and the Stavanger City Art Collection. In 2026, they are due for a solo exhibition at NITJA Centre for Contemporary Art.
